Science Unit - Week 1

Hello parents! It's been a while, but I started taking photos again this week because we've just started a very exciting and engaging unit - an Introduction to Science! Grade 4/3, our buddies, have also been in the classroom to help us every day when it comes to centers time.

Monday, Day 1, was biology day. We learned about pine trees since it is too cold outside for regular plants to grow. We did activities such as learning how the roots of a tree drink up water and the tactile hands-on activity of picking out pine cones and pine needles.

We also started our first science experiment - putting pine needles into various solutions to see which ones are bad for the pine trees (will kill the pine needles). We used water, oil, vinegar, and coffee. Stay tuned to see which ones will hurt the pine needles because so far they are going strong! (Which shows how hardy pine trees are!)

Tuesday, Day 2, was our first space day. We started our space centers which included - colouring in a space ship, designing and drawing your own space ship, making constellation art, reading space books, writing about space, and our space rocket dramatic center. The kids started adding onto the rocket ship and making it their own, which was great to see!

Wednesday, Day 3, was our second space day. We continued on with the space centers. We also had a presentation by a very special guest, Dr. Stephen Jeans, from Ambrose University. The kids were very engaged and we learned a lot. First we learned about the solar system, astronauts, and space in general. Then we went outside and Dr. Jeans gave us a special instrument that we could look through to safely look at the sun (the black piece of material made the sun look green). Finally, we went back inside to make a human model of the solar system.

Thursday, Day 4, was environmental science day. We did an oil spill experiment and talked about how water pollution is bad for the animals, specifically penguins. Then during center time, the kindergartners got a chance to rescue the animals and clean them with an oil spill sensory bin.

Friday, Day 5, was engineer day. We had another special guest in the classroom, Ms. Law's husband, who is an engineer. Mr. Dalla Vecchia talked to the kids about how there are different kinds of engineers who design things from airplanes to shoes, and how they need to test their designs to make sure that they work. Then we got to do two different centers - one where the kids saw what items could float and which materials would be good for a boat or an anchor, and another where the kids made buildings out of popsicle sticks and clothespins.

Tune in next week to hear more about our science adventures!

    1. We have been having lots of fun! :) The idea is to introduce kids to various topics in science and show them that they, too, can be scientists.
